Walter
Winters
December 27, 1943 – March 1, 2022
Passed peacefully away at Brookfield Hospital on March 1, 2022 Walter Winters age 78 of New Wes Valley.
Predeceased by his parents George and Ethel Winters, brothers Roland (Ula) and Maxwell Winters, brothers in law Eric Rogers, William Freake, Samuel Wilkins, Hayward Stokes and Hal Isinor of Woodstock NB
Leaving to mourn are his beloved wife of 47 years, Mary (Stokes), brother George Winters ( Gloria), sisters Verna Isinor of Woodstock NB, Lena Rogers of Pools Island, Susie Wilkins of Gander and Jessie Freake of Wesleyvile, along with special sister-in-law Arlene Winters of Saint John, NB and many nephews and nieces.
The second of very underweight twins, the first of whom expired seconds after birth, Mother refused to accept the Midwife's same diagnosis for Walter. Instead, Mother began incubating him in the oven of the Franklin stove. With the survival instincts of every Outport mother in those trying times, Mother kept incubating Walter until his weight and fitness enabled natural survival. He went on to a full life that was well lived until age 78.
A soft hearted and gentle person, Walter never met a stranger. Anyone who met him was touched by his humour and infectious smile. A gregarious person by nature and on social Media, known to all wherever he went in New Wes Valley, Walter was very passionate about the Jubilee Church and its congregation where, for 47 years he was its loyal and devoted Sexton. On thousands of occasions in that time period, he responded to every request for church services with diligence and devotion driven by his desire that Jubilee Church maintain its long held position as leader of its community.
An outdoors person by nature and his time as a lobster fisherman, Walter loved nothing better than going trouting, boiling up, cycling, boating, fiddling with his electronic devices, visiting cemeteries and picnics on his favourite island, Outside Bishops Island. An inveterate video recorder of hundreds community events from weddings, funerals, and singsong sessions at Seniors homes, Walter also kept a host of diaries where for over 50 years he jotted down the tombstone details of just about every one of the Jubilee Congregation who passed on during his tenure.
Blessed with an exceptional memory, he was a font of descendant information and could quickly recall upon request every detail of the deceased person's age, date of death and family members, both deceased and living. Through his 200+ videos and dozens of tombstone diaries, his legacy will live on as a part of the history of his beloved community.
We can now take comfort that he has discarded his mortal coil, ascended through the pearly gates, up among the stars invisible, where the roses never fade, into joyous reunion with all of the extended Winters Clan who have preceded him.
Fly high Walter, and, for us still earthbound, kiss the face God.
Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at 2 P.M. at Jubilee United Church , Wesleyville with Rev. George Kean officiating. Inurnment will follow at Jubilee United Church Cemetery, Wesleyville.
As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations in Walter's memory may be made to The Jubilee United Church, Wesleyville.
