Evidence of a life well lived - Shirley Patricia Hutchison born March 18th, 1939 spoke of death casually and without fear, often lamenting about her desire to be returned to the sea. And on the afternoon of April 4th at the Brookfield Hospital, surrounded by family the seagulls came and carried her spirit home.
Born to Eric Winter SR and June (Palmer Bell) Winter, Shirley was the youngest of 3 children (Jolene, Eric Winter JR) A daddy's girl with everything to prove - Shirley was a fearless adventurer who would go on to become a teacher, and join the Canadian Air force shortly after that, where she would get the chance to travel the world.
While stationed in Mont Apica Quebec, Shirley met and married the love of her life John Hutchison whom she celebrated her 62nd anniversary with on the day she passed. Together they ventured the world - singing and dancing their way across continents and time zones.
After being stationed in Metz, France, they returned to Canada to settle in Toronto, Ontario. Thanks to Shirley's magnetic personality and unwavering hospitality, their home quickly became a home base for many Newfoundlanders passing through. You could always count on a drink, a dance and good laugh in Shirley's company.
Eventually returning to her hometown of Badgers Quay in '75 to be closer to family - Shirley opened the Yellow Tea Pot Restaurant and Inn where she would serve her community for the next 20 years. A community staple that quickly became a welcome reprieve for family's caring for loved ones at the hospital across the street.
When she wasn't working at the restaurant or hosting travelers at her Bed and Breakfast, Shirley could be found doing the Jive at the family-owned Good View Hotel, throwing darts at the club, or playing crib at home, for those who were up to the challenge. Shirley always loved a good game - especially if she was winning. Which she often did.
She is survived and dearly missed by husband John Hutchison, her four children, Kristine (Greg), Kimberly (Mike), Kirk (Jennifer) and Kyle (De Ann), 11 grandchildren Nathan, Jean-Luc, Alexa, Lauren, Jack, Emilia, Leah, Chloe, Sage, Irelyn and Griffin and 2 great grand children, Lola and Mac.
