Lillian

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loved one on Monday, May 13, 2024 at Dr. Y.K.Jeon Kittiwake Health Centre, Brookfield, NL, Lillian Dyke age 71 years of Badger's Quay, NL.
"To have two caring and loving parents is a blessing - to have four, is a double blessing."
Lillian was predeceased by her parents, Malcolm and Anastatia (Rogers) Matthews, Peter and Mary (Matthews) Button, and daughter Tracy Stokes; special niece Sandra Dyke; brothers-in-law, Melvin and Gordon Dyke, Manuel Hillier, Frank Collins; sisters-in-law, Josephine Collins, Sheila Ward Matthews.
Leaving to mourn, Husband; Nathaniel, Son; Ralph (Jennifer), Grandchildren; Nathan (Jasmin), Dezarae (Brandon), Tracy's foster children, Harry, Montana, Tayden, and Alexis, all of whom she dearly loved, Brothers; Absalom (Margaret), Malcolm (Ann), John (Neta), Gary (Shirley), Peter (Susan), Jesse, Job; Sisters, Charlotte (Rex), Blanche, Priscilla, Rose (Stan), Maggie (Clayton), Millie (Percy), Sheila; Sisters -in law; Leah (Norman), Cynthia Dyke, Brothers-in-law; Raymond (Brenda), Spencer (Joyce), Baxter (Marilyn), Frank, Shawn (Sherry), Michael (Angela).
Lilian was one of a twin (Malcolm) born on Silver Fox Island to Anastatia and Malcolm Matthews. Her father's aunt and uncle, Mary and Peter lived next door. Their daughter Trixie would go over to help Anastatia with the children. Lillian became very attached to Trixie and at the age of 2, would cry to go over and sleep with her. Anastatia, given that Lillian was crying, said to Trixie, "it is just as well for you to take her". Lillian would go over with Trixie in the nighttime and return with her in the morning. This continued until Lillian reached the age of 7.
At the age of 7, the island was resettled with the Matthews family deciding to move to Wareham and the Button Family moving to Badger's Quay. This was a very stressful time for Lillian. Both families gave her the option to choose where she wanted to move. Lillian decided that she would move to Wareham but the boat got halfway to Wareham before they had to return because she was crying to go back with Trixie. This special mother/daughter relationship continued right up until her death. After moving to Badger's Quay, she inherited additional brothers and sisters, Rita (Bruce), Harry (Daphne), Ralph (Sandra) and Linda (Fred).
Lillian loved all of her brothers and sisters very much but there was a special bond between her and her twin brother Malcolm. She enjoyed her visits to Wareham where she spent so much time with her family. Birthdays, family get togethers and any reason to celebrate were very important and loved by her.
Lillian worked at Brookfield Cottage Hospital before the birth of her children and then went to work at Beothic Processors for 30-plus years.
Trips to Thompson Manitoba to visit Ralph, Tracy, and their families were something she dearly looked forward to. In her spare time, Lillian liked to walk, cross-country ski, and go fishing, especially ice fishing. You could find Lillian out on Backup Pond all day ice fishing. She also loved to go on picnics whether in Newfoundland or Manitoba.
We would be remiss if our family didn't acknowledge the countless hours of nurturing care and dedication that sister Priscilla spent with Lillian during her illness. A special thank you to her home care workers, doctors, nurses and staff at Dr. Y . K . Jeon Kittiwake Health Centre. Lillian was lovingly cared for and always appreciated the kindness she received.
Lillian was well-loved and gave a lot of love.
