Obituary

John Evan Thomas

October 27, 1961 - February 5, 2025

Our life-loving partner and friend John left us February 5, 2025.

John is survived by beloved and adored partner Micky Carmichael, cherished daughters Haley and Emily (Casey), and grandson Ezra, loved bonus family Benjamin Coy, Jarrick and Virginia Coy, and grandchildren Jayce, Daxton, Zander, and Aubrey. He is also survived by his five siblings, sisters Cain Linzee (David), Megan Strother (Denny), and Morgan Millard (Bruce) and brothers Harry Thomas (Sherry) and Bill Thomas (Paula), and dear extended family Mary Asselin (Larry), Martha Asselin (Murray), Brenda Asselin (John), John Asselin, and Betty Asselin.

John is predeceased by his mother and father Eleanor and Harry Thomas, wife Joanne, and nephew Gabe.

John was born in Niles Michigan and spent his youth in Ohio. He was the fourth of six siblings in the family of Harry and Eleanor Thomas. John's adventurous spirit led him to Wildwater rafting on the Chattooga river in South Carolina, where he became a river guide. There John met his love and first wife Joanne, mother of his two daughters. After being a stay at home dad for a few years, John became involved in the fire service and wilderness medicine, and eventually became an EMT and paramedic. He also became an emergency medicine instructor. He brought these skills with him to New Brunswick. Settling in the village of Gagetown, John joined the volunteer fire department, retiring as chief in 2021. During this time John continued to work as an emergency medical educator for NB Power. In late 2019 he met someone to match his spirit, Micky. From the beginning the pair never wasted a moment, hiking, kayaking, and thoroughly enjoying life. 2021 brought an opportunity of a lifetime when John became the new postmaster in Newtown, the Venice of Newfoundland. Calling themselves "Newfoundlanders by Choice," John and Micky quickly became as loved by the community as they loved it. Seeing more of Newfoundland than most, in their typical fashion they didn't waste a moment. A life with no regrets.

Time in nature and the great outdoors, good music, and good friends brought joy to John's life. Whether kayaking, hiking, playing his bass, or sharing a friendly conversation at the post office window, John loved each moment with each person. He embraced every community he lived in, loved and was loved by so many. John's family is deeply grateful for the continuous support and love that those communities are providing.

It is with tears we think of the loss of John, and it is with big smiles we remember his incredible life.

Well I'm thinking I'm knowing that I gotta be going

You know I hate to say so long.

It gives me an ocean of mixed up emotion

I'll have to work it out in a song.

Well I'm leaving a lot for the little I got

But you know a lot a little will do

And if you give me your love

I'll let it shine up above

And light my way back home to you.

John Prine, 1989, You Got Gold

We look forward to celebrating John's life together later in the year.
