It is with immeasurable sadness and grief that the family of James Cox announces his passing after a short but courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the age of 79.

Jim is lovingly remembered and cherished by his wife of 56 years, Frances; his children, Robert (Cherie) and Roy; his grandchildren, James (Jessica), Jory (Wendy), "Pop's Princess" Janelle (Michael), Krystin, Cameron (Olivia), and Zachary; his great-grandchildren, Lexi, CJ (Cyril James), Bodhi, Ty, Remi, and Theo; his beloved and special niece, Betty Lou (Leonard); and numerous family members, close friends, and colleagues.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Marjorie (Gerald) and Lewis (Rae); and his brother, Robert (Marlene).Jim was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1946. Life took him to both British Columbia and Alberta in his younger years before he returned to Nova Scotia as a teenager. His early life was not easy, but he persevered, and at 17 years of age, he began his sailing career with the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) aboard the CSS Acadia. It was during his time on the Acadia that he discovered the wonderful island of Newfoundland, where he found a little treasure that changed his life. Jim and Fran were love-struck from the very beginning and were married in 1970. He would go on to serve aboard many ships during his 42-year career with BIO, CN Marine, and the Canadian Coast Guard. He was a proud member of "the Guard" and quickly made many lifelong friends throughout the fleet and organization. He spent many months sailing in the Arctic, along the St. Lawrence River, and around Newfoundland and Labrador on various vessels, with his favourites being the CCGS Sir John Franklin, Ann Harvey, and Henry Larsen. After advancing from engine room mechanic to ship's logistics officer, Jim retired from his sailing career in 2014, and his dedication to his community truly flourished.He held a deep-rooted love for his community. Whether helping run the canteen at the local stadium, assisting with the launch of a community television channel, or singing with the Brotherhood of Anglican Churchmen, his energy, generosity, and devotion to his adopted home were immeasurable. Though a quiet man, he possessed a remarkable passion for giving and helping others that cannot be adequately expressed. His loss is a loss to all who knew him. Jim held a deep faith in God and devoted his heart to the Church and to the Lord. Shortly before his passing, one of his greatest wishes was fulfilled when he was baptized into the Anglican Church.His loss to our family is immense. To us, he was a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, an uncle... and our hero.Today, we mourn him and celebrate his life. We miss a man who meant so much to us, and we are forever grateful that we had the privilege of knowing and loving him.God bless you, Jim.

A memorial service will be held at the Kittiwake Funeral Home , Pound Cove, NL  with further details to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations to one of Jim's biggest passions, the St. John Anglican Cemetery would be greatly appreciated.
