Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our dear father, Carson Kitchener Peddle, 88, of Aspen Cove. Dad passed away peacefully in the presence of family, on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander.

Dad was born on June 11, 1934, in Musgrave Harbour, to Stanley Peddle and Eva (Chaulk).  At the young age of 9 his mom passed, and he was taken into the care of his grandparents Uncle Jesse and Aunt Polly Chaulk. Uncle Ray, just 2 years old, was taken in by his mom's sister, Aunt Lucy, and her husband, Uncle Hiram Shelley, in Aspen Cove.  In his early teens, when his grandparents were no longer capable of caring for him, Dad (and his grand parents) joined his little brother Ray in the loving home of Aunt Lucy and Uncle Hiram, who also had two small children of their own (Garfield and Mary).

Dad often spoke of the incredible love and kindness shown by Aunt Lucy and Uncle Hiram, and their family, who loved them as their own and who worked hard to instill qualities of kindness and humility in two young boys tragically bereaved of their mother.  We so eagerly await the day when Dad and Uncle Ray are reunited with their mom.

On November 24, 1953, Dad married the love of his life, our mom, Verna (Tulk) in Aspen Cove, and in a few short years, 5 sons and 1 daughter blessed the union: Wade, Jesse, Randy, Dean, Scott, and (finally!) a daughter - Dale. Throughout our lives, as time passed and we grew into adults, we clearly saw the exemplary love and kindness that Dad showed to everyone, and especially to Mom.  Motivated no doubt by his own tragic loss, Dad made sure we grew up knowing that a mother's love is truly special.

Throughout his life Dad worked in various jobs in the fishery, in Millertown logging camps, in various construction and labour fields, and with the Department of Highways.  Away from work, Dad cherished time spent with Mom and us kids. A very loving and devoted father, we enjoyed spending time with him cutting wood, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and playing guitar, to name just a few things.  In his later years Dad thoroughly enjoyed creating slideshows on his computer and has left us with a library of many, many thousands of family pictures and videos.

Dad was a devoted Jehovah's Witness, baptized October 25, 1969. He served as an elder in the Aspen Cove/Lumsden congregations for many years and was serving as such at the time of his death. His faith played a major role in his life and anchored us as a family. He was known by all as a humble, wise, and kind-hearted man who found it easy to see the good in others, to enjoy a good laugh, and to find joy in the simple things in life. This expression, which he often used, epitomises the kind of man Dad was: "There's never a good reason to be unkind". He died as he lived – faithful and with full trust in Jehovah.

Dad was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Eva Peddle; stepparents Hiram and Lucy Shelley; brother Raymond Peddle; sister Violet Brace; stepbrother Garfield Shelley; stepsister Mary Mouland; grand-daughter-in law Dana Peddle; mother and father-in-law Bert and Olive Tulk; brothers-in-law Newman Tulk, Ellis Hancock, and Walter "Tot" Tulk.

Left to mourn are Verna, his loving wife of 69 years; his sons Wade (Rita), Jesse (Wilhelmina), Randy (Kimberly), Dean (Debi), Scott (Suzette) and his daughter Dale (John); his beloved grandchildren, Cheree (Dave), Duane (Jodine), Cheyenne (Nicola), Shane (Svitlana), Jonathan (Melissa), Benjamin (Heather), Aaron (Fallon), Alex (Desireé), Scottie (Kaitlyn), Spencer (Ashley), and Jacob;  great grand-children Kaila, Emily, Joshua, Sophie, Luke, Abby, Casey, Maddox, Caleb, Jackson, Madelyn, and Emelia. Grieving also are a large circle of beloved family and friends, too numerous to name. A special mention goes to Bruce and Marilyn Torraville, and their girls Dawn, Dinah, Ashley, and Janelle, for their loving support and unselfish help to the family over the years. To Dad you were family.

The family would like to extend thanks to the healthcare workers at James Paton Memorial Hospital and Kittiwake Funeral Homes for their care and compassion. The family would also like to thank everyone who has sent messages, flowers, and food during this very difficult time.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the worldwide work of Jehovah's Witnesses at donate.jw.org.
