Obituary

Passed peacefully away at Bonnews Lodge Senior Citizens Home in Badger's Quay, on April 10 th , 2022, Bessie Lucretia Spurrell of 99 years. Bessie was born on Pools Island on July 17 th , 1922, to parents Albert & Sarah Ann Sheppard. She was predeceased by her husband Willis, Daughter Annie Winsor, Son-in Law Llewellyn Boland, as well as granddaughter Joanne Winsor. Bessie also outlived her two brothers and their wives, Darius Sheppard (Helen) and Eric Sheppard (Frances).

Bessie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her family and their happiness meant everything to her and she did what she could for every single one, never treating one any differently than the others. She was well known as 'Aunt Bessie' in the community and beyond, because of her care and concern to all. She made the stranger feel welcomed and loved in her home and gave all she could to help others, both in kind and coin. Bessie was a faithful member and dearly cherished St. James Anglican Church on Pools Island. She gave her entire life to both service in the choir as well as the ACW, of which she was a member for over 80 years.  She attended all church functions, freely giving of her time and love.

Bessie lived a modest life. She worked a couple of smaller jobs in her younger years ('In Care' for her Aunt in St. John's, as well as at Monroe's Fishplant in Badger's Quay). She raised her two daughters 'down by the landwash' at the fish flakes. She was a hard worker and always helped to provide for her family.

Her most favorite past-times were time spent with family & friends, a good game of cards, bingo, knitting, berry-picking, watching the soap operas and game shows, a good sociable drink, socials at the local lodges (with a good jig or square dance), and relaxing outside in the sunshine.  These were her pleasures in life.

Bessie leaves to mourn and to celebrate her life, her devoted daughter-Marie, Nephew/'Son'-Albert Sheppard (Sheila), Grandchildren: Scott Winsor (Donna), Wesley Winsor Jr. (Irene), Joanne Knee (Dave), Sheldon Winsor (Amy), Tina Martin (Scott), Brenda Lee Goodyear (Tim), Great-Grandchildren: George Mews (Melissa), Ryan Winsor (Patricia), Randy Winsor (Jacinta), Robyn White (Steve), Andrew knee (Tara), Jordan Mews, Patrick Knee (Rae-lene), Jacob Martin, Jonah Goodyear, Laurel Martin and Jayda Goodyear, Great-Great-Grandchildren: Austin Mews, Tyler Rogers, Selena Keats, Brianna Mews, Finn Knee, Olivia Keats, Emily Winsor, Elena Knee, and Amelia Hart. Bessie also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews, their extended families, and a large circle of friends.

Longevity was gifted to our Mom/Nan. How truly blessed we feel as a family to have had her with us for so long. We celebrate her life and what she meant to us all. A life well lived indeed!
