Obituary

Newman Abbott, October 25, 1935 - September 3, 2019

The family of the late Newman Abbott regret to announce his passing on September 3 at the age of 83.

Newman was born in Musgrave Harbour on October 25, 1935, the youngest son of the late Sophie and Allan Abbott. His father died when Newman was just three years old and times were tough for Newman and his brothers Eugene and Albert (both deceased along with infant brother Clyde). As soon as he was old enough, Newman headed out to sea to earn a living as a fisherman. He married Annie (Hayward) in 1955 and they made a home on the beach where they raised six children; Paul (Bonnie), Janice (Graham Snow), Donna (Lloyd Coles), Shawn (Jean), Paddy (Penny) and Peter (Dianne Burton).

Newman could often be found in his shed, listening to the roar of the waves and reminiscing with buddies about time spent on the fishing banks of the Wadhams and Funk Islands. He also loved his time in the woods cutting firewood, hunting, picking berries and gathering unusual and oddshaped items to adorn his yard and shed. He had a keen eye for spotting wood art in nature and loved to show off the tree branch alphabet he collected over the course of many years. He made daily visits to the breakwater and other landmarks in his beloved community of Musgrave Harbour, but no matter what he was up to, he always made it home in time to watch "The Price is Right."

Newman is survived by his wife Annie of 63 years and their 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and brothers, Newman is predeceased by granddaughter Shecara who died in infancy. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.

" The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its nets of wonder forever."

Jacques Yves Cousteau
